Resplendent ancient temples and golden pagodas, devout nuns and monks, tranquil lakes and rivers, ornamented hillside tribes, colorful markets… this is the essence of Burma.
Burma, untouched by the civilized world, is the focus of David Heath’s new book. He has captured a beautiful pictorial of Burmese life and culture as it has existed for centuries before it becomes irrevocably changed by the intrusion of the Western world.
With a vast library of stunning photographs taken over nearly a decade of trips to Burma, David Heath requested ICLA design and produce a memorable photographic tribute to Burma to capture the essence these remarkably generous, compassionate, humorous and resilient people, their culture and the extraordinary natural vistas of their country. The Burmese may be the last people in the world to still experience the joy of “being”, not yet caught up in the material trappings of the modern world.
The result is a deluxe case-bound book with a display typeface created by ICLA specifically to capture the essence of Burma. The smyth sewn, case bound book is printed in four color process and satin varnish on New-G matte art paper, has a leather cover with a printed tip-on that is printed four color process and gloss UV.
A deluxe limited edition collection was produced at the same time as well. This deluxe edition has the same text pages, but is bound with a printed silk cover and has a numbered, limited edition certificate fabricated as part of the front end sheet. This deluxe limited edition book is presented in a de-bossed and foil stamped black leather clamshell.
There is a small subset of the numbered limited edition books that are actually signed by Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese opposition politician, chairperson of the National League for Democracy and civil rights leader, who spent 15 of the last 21 years under house arrest. While Aung San Suu Kyi does not offer her signature for commercial work, she made an exception for David Heath because he truly and beautifully captured the essence of the Burma she so loves in this book. Her signature alone is a tribute to the quality of Burma – An Enchanted Spirit.
