One day in 1949, Roebuck (Pops) Staples gathered his children and began to teach them songs. That inauspicious day was the beginning of an amazing career that spanned four decades and developed a new sound of folk and gospel music that was in part hymn to the progress of the civil rights movement. During their long career, they played for Dr. Martin Luther King, Presidents Kennedy, Carter, Clinton and Obama, won Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
